De gauche à droite : Un étudiant en médecine opère une dissection à la faculté de Montpellier. Andreï montre le costume qu’il portera pour son retour en Roumanie, devant des bureaux récents à Bagneux. Jai pose devant le bâtiment squatté d’un ancien conservatoire à Noisy-le-Sec.
Le triptyque photographique tire son titre du conte d’Andersen, dans lequel un empereur soucieux des apparences se fait avoir par deux escrocs lui proposant un habit fait d’un tissu que seuls les idiots ne peuvent pas voir. N'osant pas avouer qu'il ne voit pas le tissu, il défile nu devant son peuple jusqu’à ce qu’un enfant s’écrie : « Le roi est nu ! », exclamation que le peuple reprend en choeur.
Chaque portrait présente une ambivalence : entre le personnage et l’architecture, entre le corps, l’habit, et sa fonction sociale. Dialoguant sur le mode du conte, les trois portraits documentaires proposent ensemble une nouvelle narration visuelle.

The photographic triptych takes its title from Andersen's tale, in which an emperor concerned with appearances is tricked by two hustlers into offering him a suit made of a fabric that only fools cannot see. Not daring to admit that he can't see the fabric, he parades naked before his people until a child cries out: "The king is naked!", an exclamation that the people take up in chorus.
Each portrait presents an ambivalence: between the figure and the architecture, between the body, the garment, and its social function. The three documentary portraits engage in a tale-like dialogue, proposing a new visual narrative.
